Boules and Flitch Wood in Pennsylvania

Horizon’s sawmill maintains the focus on the production of American Hardwood Boules and Flitches that it was originally designed for when the first machine was installed in the early ‘90s.  Although we’ve expanded our capabilities since then our boules and flitches are still the best produced in the US.  Our inventory of American hardwood boules is made up of logs that have been selected specifically for this purpose.

What Is A Wooden Flitch?

The term flitch comes from the veneer side of the industry.  It refers to a piece of wood, either square edged or natural edged, that is one in a sequence of matching pieces.  Common thicknesses for flitches are 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4, 10/4, and 12/4, however we offer many custom thicknesses based on a customers’ needs.  Horizon Wood produces flitches from a variety of wood species, including Cherry, Walnut, White Oak, Hard Maple, and many, many more.

Boules and Flitches: What’s the Difference?

Essentially, when the matching flitches from one log are grouped together you have a boule.  Once a log has been cut into flitches, we track and label each piece to make sure the entire log is maintained.  However when we are cutting our boules for custom orders not all flitches may make the grade that the customer expects or needs.  So, we improve the quality of the boule by removing any flitches that are of a subpar quality.  The result is large volumes of consistently graded boules made up of many flitches.

The Benefits of Boules

Made from the finest hardwood logs in the USA, wooden boules from Horizon provide consistency between each flitch. Because every piece of the boule is sourced from the same log, each piece carries the same qualities as the others. The perfect match of the flitches allows the woodworker to create a masterpiece that is uniform in color, grain, texture, and quality.
