Horizon Wood Products is not a typical sawmill and its uniqueness is immediately apparent with the first step onto the property. As with everything Horizon undertakes planning, building and maintaining the property is done with a sense of pride and a concern for appearance. The first thing that impresses the visitor to the company is the orderliness of the place. “I never thought a sawmill could be so clean.” is a quote often repeated.

The sawmill is equipped with a large band headrig that is specially slant-mounted with a focus on putting the least stress on the wood as it is being processed. The equipment supporting the mill and driving the trimming stations and green chain is highly sophisticated and computer networked in order to maintain the continuous tracking and labeling of the product as it moves through the manufacturing process.

Horizon has expanded its kiln drying capacity three additional times since it first introduced its specialty Italian dry kilns several years ago. Horizon practices a philosophy of “proper, patient drying, using state-of-the-art equipment and a minimum of energy consumption.” Ironically, their kilns are so efficient the energy company has questioned how they can possibly use so little energy and produce so much dry wood. Horizon is constantly striving to improve their drying techniques.

The log yard at Horizon also projects the high quality image of the company. Log sales are laid out on a large, well maintained, concrete platform to enhance the cleanliness of the logs and make the inspection process easier. Horizon staff is always on hand during a sale to assist the buyer. High quality logs are carefully protected from the weather and elements in storage and staging buildings.

Sorting, grading and shipping of the Horizon products is done in a large expansion on the property. The process is refined with the use of the labor and time saving Balz robotic lifting device. This equipment, which is capable of lifting ranks of flitches with its vacuum assist mechanism, was engineered and built in Switzerland specifically for the Horizon installation. It is one of the many innovations Horizon has implemented to make the job more efficient and less physically demanding for the workers.

Horizon’s pride clearly shines through, as one look at the property will tell.
