Evergreen Environment Our Pledge
Horizon Wood Products has long recognized the importance of environmental concerns and the praiseworthy efforts of such groups as the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and the Forest Stewardship Council. These organizations, with their focus on sound harvesting practices and the commitment to create a healthy and sustainable forest, move the procurement part of wood products industry in exactly the right direction. However, it is understood that sometimes the best of intentions are only a good beginning. Horizon is convinced that it is important to extend the strong concepts of the groups that focus on sound harvesting practices, to promoting conservation and good practices as they relate to all aspects of he industry and its manufacturing process. Our concern must move beyond only as they relate to the procurement of raw materials. The EverGreen Initiative is an extension of the good ground work that has already been established through the efforts of other organizations. In the year 2000, Horizon felt compelled to do more to bridge the gap between the positive efforts being promoted in the procurement area and the lack of attention being given to the remaining aspects of the manufacturing process. The Horizon Pledge was developed as a way of showing others how committed Horizon is to healthy efficiencies and ethics in ALL aspects of manufacturing. At that time, the EverGreen logo was developed as a visual representation of the philosophy. As time goes on, Horizon is convinced that this concept is not unique to our company alone. The original pledge has been refreshed to encompass the six parameters of the EverGreen Initiative. It is our belief that as more and more companies within the industry show their commitment to the Initiative, we can all learn to function more efficiently, and the public will recognize the efforts of wood products companies as being strong, healthy and ethically based.
